The Wellcome Trust medical charity has confirmed it is considering acquiring London’s Olympic Park and transforming the site into a major science and technology centre after the Games.
A report in the Financial Times claimed that the Trust had offered 1 billion pounds to buy up the freehold of the bulk of the 2012 Olympic Park, including the stadium, aquatics centre, athletics village and media centre.
Although a spokesman for the charity refused to confirm the financial details of the offer, the London-based Trust, which is already one of nine bidders for the freehold to the Olympic Village, is now exploring a more extensive deal to utilise the Park’s facilities.
“The Wellcome Trust has been shortlisted by the Olympic Delivery Authority to submit a proposal for the purchase and long-term management of the residential properties known as the Athletes Village,” the spokesman told Reuters.
“In exploring this opportunity further, we are giving detailed consideration as to how we may also become investors in the wider Olympic Park and optimise the legacy of the Olympics.
“To this end we are currently meeting with a broad range of stakeholders to explore this opportunity further.”
Newham Council and English Premier League club West Ham United recently secured the right to become the anchor tenant of the Olympic Stadium after the conclusion of the Games.
