Following the success of the IRB World Cup, the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) has launched its’ own tournament to capitalize on the global popularity of the sport.
Kicking off on April 26th 2008, Asia’s top nations by IRB ranking, Japan, Korea, Arabian Gulf, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan will play each other on a home and away basis over 5 weeks.
ARFU has appointed IEC in Sports as the television coordinators to ensure consistent production, live delivery, graphics and English commentary from all venues. At least one live match will be available each week with additional footage from other matches incorporated into highlights.
“Television and mass media exposure is going to be the key to image enhancement and broadening the fan base for rugby in Asia. We are looking forward to a close partnership with IEC, for the mutual success of the tournament” said Allan Payne, Chairman of the Asian 5 Nations Committee.
“Rugby is a strong extension of our sports offering to broadcasters worldwide. We are honoured to be appointed to represent the HSBC Asian 5 Nations, which will ultimately decide which Asian team will qualify for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.” said Jonas Persson, CEO of IEC in Sports.
