Doha is to have another big sporting feast in 2011.
Qatar which has become a sports hub of the Middle East after the wonderful hosting of the 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006 will now have another chance to host the 2011 Asian Indoor games.
The fourth Asian Indoor Games were allotted to Qatar on April 17 when the governing body Olympic Council of Asia held its annual general assembly in Kuwait.
The Secretary General of the QNOC HE Sheikh Saoud Abdulrahman Al Thani was also appointed Vice-President of the 2011 Asian Indoor games which will be the fourth Asian Indoor games ever since its inception in 2005.
It will strategically plan of making wise use of all the facilities that were constructed for the Doha 15th Asian Games hosted by Qatar in December 2006.
Qatar has already the necessary infrastructure to host the event. As many as four to five thousand athletes both men and women were expected to take part in the 4th Asian Indoor Games.
Being held after two years normally and one year after the regular Asian Games, this multi sport games concept was initiated by OCA to provide opportunity to those sports which have a strong Television and marketing appeal and are normally not under the regular Asian games.
Earlier in the inaugural Asian Indoor games which were held in Bangkok in 2005, the disciplines were kept at nine.
This year, Macau will host the second edition of the games in October having 17 disciplines and 151 events with 476 medals. The Sports Programme is Aerobics Gymnastics, Bowling,.Chess, Cue Sports,.Dance Sport , Dragon & Lion Dance, Electronic Sports (E-Sports),.Extreme Sports (X-Sports), Fin swimming, Futsal, Hoop Sepaktakraw,.Indoor Athletics,Indoor Cycling, Indoor Hockey,Muay.
Short Course Swimming (25 meters) and Indoor kabaddi. The two demonstration sport are-. Kickboxing and Kurash.
In the inaugural Asian Indoor held in Bangkok in 2005, there were just nine games. Billiards, bowling, Dragon and Lion dance, chess, e-sports, and indoor hockey, indoor kabaddi, indoor athletics have been added in the second edition of the games.
In 2009, the third Asian Indoor games will be held in Hanoi- Vietnam.
