Thursday, leaders of the European and U.S. golf tours met with Jacques Rogge, head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), to discuss the possibility of golf returning to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The last time golf was part of the Olympics was at the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis.
George O’Grady, chief executive for the European tour, said after the meeting in Lausanne Switzerland that included U.S. tour head Tim Finchem, “we now know all of the obstacles we have to overcome. We now know all of the ground rules we have to satisfy”, reports the CBC
O’Grady said nothing was agreed upon. He said, “we know the time scale when we have to present our case. We know the support we have to have from around the world”.
Despite talks going on and off for 25 years nothing has been decided.
Many of the minor tours the European Tour represents across the continent want golf in the Olympic Games because of the increased government funding they would receive, said O’Grady.
