FIFA may ask Brazil to host the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament if South Africa isn't deemed ready to host the international tournament, Spain's AS.com Web site reported.

FIFA told the South African government it has contacted Brazil's soccer federation, known as CBF, to see if the Latin American country, which is set to host the World Cup in 2014, will be ready to host the 2010 competition, AS reported, without saying where it got the information. South Africa would then host the event in 2014 so it wouldn't lose the money it's invested to prepare for the event, AS said.

There are three candidate countries ready to take over if South Africa is unable to host, AS said without naming the countries. Brazil is a likely candidate because since 2006 it has been the only candidate to host the 2014 Cup and has been preparing for the 2014 event for more than a year, AS said.
