The International Olympic Committee (IOC) accepted the proposal Saturday by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee to change the site of the Youth Olympic Village.
Originally the village has been slated for the National University of Singapore’s University Town. The change is due to the global surge in construction activity and costs of building materials, which would have affected the construction of the NUS U-Town.
Following a careful study Singapore 2010 decided that the alternative site at the NTU campus would be a more prudent choice, would still meet all the requirements of the Youth Olympic Village and would be consistent with the IOC’s instructions to keep the costs of organizing the Youth Games at a reasonable level.
Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) chairman Ser Miang Ng said “the NTU campus will make an outstanding Games village. SYOGOC will continue to work closely with the IOC to ensure that the YOG participants will have their needs well met in comfortable facilities that will provide a memorable living and learning experience during their stay in Singapore in August 2010”.
