Tribune Co. obtained local broadcast rights to six National Football League games scheduled to be carried by the NFL Network during the regular season, adding to sports coverage that includes Chicago Cubs baseball.
Stations in New York, Dallas, San Diego, New Orleans, Denver and Indianapolis will air games otherwise available only to subscribers of cable and satellite services that carry the NFL Network, Chicago-based Tribune said today in a statement. Terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.
The schedule includes a Nov. 13 match between the New York Jets, led by newly acquired quarterback Brett Favre, and the New England Patriots, last year's American Football Conference champion. The NFL is feuding with Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc., the biggest U.S. cable services, to make its network more widely available. The cable companies want lower rates.
The first game, between the Denver Broncos and the Cleveland Browns, will air Nov. 6 on KWGN-TV in Denver and the final match between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys will be broadcast Dec. 20 on KDAF-TV in Dallas, Tribune said.
Tribune, publisher of the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times, was taken private in December by real-estate billionaire Sam Zell. The company operates 23 television stations, WGN America on cable and Chicago's WGN-AM, and is seeking a buyer for the Cubs.
