Wellington and Christchurch will host the 2011 Rugby World Cup quarterfinals, while Auckland's Eden Park will stage the competition's final four matches.
Wellington's Westpac Stadium and AMI Stadium in Christchurch beat bids from venues in Auckland and Hamilton, the New Zealand Rugby Union said today. Eden Park, which had already secured the final and semifinals, today won the right to stage the third-place playoff.
The decision mirrors the format used at the 2003 World Cup in Australia, when Melbourne and Brisbane each hosted two quarterfinals and Sydney had the final four games. For last year's edition in France, two of the quarterfinals were held in Marseille and one each in Paris and Cardiff.
``We understood Rugby World Cup Limited's preference to host the quarterfinals in only two venues, as that is far easier from an operational and paying spectator's standpoint,'' Martin Snedden, the 2011 tournament's chief executive officer, said in an e-mailed statement.
The quarterfinals will be played Oct. 7-9, 2011, with the semifinals scheduled Oct. 15 and 16 ahead of the final, which is slated for the following weekend.
