South Africa’s Local Organising Committee for the 2010 World Cup was blasted by the Fifa president Sepp Blatter today, for not punting the event enough.
On the last day of his trip to the country, Blatter cracked the whip at the LOC – saying they needed to get their act together in marketing and advertising the 2010 Soccer World Cup and the Confederations Cup.
He added that there may not be enough accommodation for tourists.
Addressing the media at the Ellis Park stadium, Johannesburg today Blatter said: “There need to be banners around the cities about the 2010 World Cup. When you walk around cities, you don’t see banners.”
“The expectation for hosting the World Cup is much higher than any other world event – including the Olympics. The kick off starts now for next year’s Confederations Cup,” said Blatter.
He also expressed his concern about the limited hotels available in Johannesburg because of the high expected number of soccer loving fans who are going to come to the country to watch the World Cup.
Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa, who was accompanied by the LOC Board chairman Irvin Khoza, CEO Danny Jordaan and government officials assured Blatter that the province was on track and that the public transport system will be ready by 2010.
