The Canadian Press reports Jagoda Pike, publisher of the Toronto Star, Canada's largest circulation newspaper, is leaving her position to help lead Ontario's bid for the 2015 Pan American Games. Pike has been with TorStar for 22 years, with the final two as publisher of the newspaper.
Pike said in a statement she is "thrilled to be joining" the Pan Am bid. "Having this event take place in Ontario would provide a tremendous opportunity to not only showcase our province but to provide a much needed shot in the arm to the Ontario economy and leave a lasting legacy for our children".
She said, "It's time for those games to come back north. What better place than Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe to host them? It would be a fantastic event given the size, breadth, and diversity of this region". She added that given the slowing economy, hosting the Pan Am Games could be just "the shot in the arm" Ontario needs.
Pike's position on the bid committee will be chief operating officer. Former Ontario Premier, David Peterson, is chairman.
Peterson said he is thrilled that Pike has joined the team. "She'll put it over the top. She's got the skills we need".
Ontario's 2015 Pan American Games bid will be officially launched Thursday with Toronto's Mayor David Miller, Ontario Minister of Health Promotion Margarett Best, and Canadian Olympic Committee president Michael Chambers in attendance.
Pike will be joining Peterson and Ontario's Premier Dalton McGuinty in Acapulco Mexico next week to launch Ontario's bid at the Pan American Sports Organization's annual meeting.
Other cities likely bidding for the 2015 Pan Am's are Bogota Colombia, Caracas Venezuela and Lima Peru.
