“For every one spectator watching the World Cup there are 15 000 people watching it around the world.”
These are the words of Tania Pellegrini of the Host Broadcast Services (HBS), the official host broadcaster for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa.
On Friday Pellegrini met with the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State’s 2010 Project Office to discuss the Fifa Soccer World Cup.
She introduced the HBS, who they are and what their role will be at the 2010 Soccer World Cup, whilst she also invited the CUT to participate in the HBS internship programme which is available to students in South Africa.
The HBS, which has been in operation since 1999, hosted the Soccer World Cup of 2002 in Korea and Japan, as well as the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany.
They will bring with them a team of 2 000 professionals producing all images and sounds of all 64 matches to be played at the ten identified venues in South Africa.
The internship programme, which forms part of the HBS’s legacy programmes, entails the training of South African students while the world cup is taking place.
The HBS has 360 positions open that can be filled with non-professionals.
Students will gain experience in, amongst other, pre-broadcasting, event management, sports production and post-production.
The selection process entails interviews with those students who applied where after they will be invited to attend an extensive three-day workshop around about this time next year. After the workshop the students will be evaluated, tested and invited for a second interview.
According to Pellegrini the internship programme will not only equip students with the necessary experience and professional training, but they will also be issued a certificate indicating that they have worked with the HBS on the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
An HBS uniform and remuneration also form part of this promising package.
Of the 360 available positions about 80 will be allocated to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), situated at the Nasrec Trade Fair Centre in Johannesburg.
Each of the ten venues will be allocated 26 to 30 student internship programme positions and of the 64 matches to be played at the 2010 Fifa world cup, 6 will be played in Bloemfontein.
