The European Rowing General Assembly has selected Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal as the venue for the 2010 European Rowing Championships. Montemor-o-Velho won the right ahead of strong bids by Duisburg, Germany, and Trakai, Lithuania.

Potentially the 2010 European Rowing Championships will see more top calibre athletes as, for the first time, they will be held before the World Rowing Championships. In 2010 the World Rowing Championships go to the Southern Hemisphere. To make the most of warmer weather in New Zealand the championships have been pushed back to start at the end of October. It is likely that the European Championships will be viewed by European nations as a superb way to prepare for the World Rowing Championships.

“We hope that we see 600 rowers from all over Europe because it will be the last opportunity to test the teams before the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand,” says President of the Portuguese Rowing Federation, Antonio Marques.

The Montemor-O-Velho rowing venue is currently used for national and regional championships in both rowing and canoeing. In 2001 they hosted the European junior event, Coupe de la Jeunesse. The course is manmade using water from the River Mondego and Marques says it is known for its natural landscape of vast rice fields.

Montemor-o-Velho is the hub of Portuguese rowing. “It is the only international 2km sized rowing course in Portugal,” says Marques. “After several testing events, the international rowing and canoeing course from Montemor-o-Velho is now ready to be officially inaugurated with the European Rowing Championships 2010.”

Marques hopes that by 2010 Portugal will be able to enter six to eight boats in the European Championships.

At the same General Assembly Poland’s Ryszard Stadniuk was unanimously re-elected to a four-year term on the European Rowing Management Board on which he is currently the Chair. The Board consists of three European members appointed by FISA and four members elected by the National Federations. The European Championships were re-started in 2007 after 33 years and the Championships in 2009 will take place at the new international regatta venue in Brest, Belarus.

This year’s European Championships were held in Marathon, Greece on the 2004 Olympic regatta course.
