ICL sews telecast deals with international broadcasters
 08/10/2008

Subhash Chandra's rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) has stitched deals with broadcasters across the world to ensure the live coverage of the second season of its Twenty20 format matches.

The telecast will be available live on BTV and ATN Bangla in Bangladesh, Gateway in North Africa, Telkom-Malysia and Astro in Malaysia, Fox Sports in Australia, Zee Music in UK, Zee TV in Africa, Zee Sports in USA, Ten Sports in Pakistan and Middle East, and Caribbean Media Corporation in West Indies and Caribbean Islands.

Web partners for the season are www.bollywood.tv, www.glutv.com, www.mypopkorn.com and www.watchindiatv.com.

Excluding South America, people from four continents can watch the matches live.

Says ICL business head Himanshu Mody, “Our success in conceptualising and executing the pioneering league format has met with favourable response from the global cricket fraternity crossing national barriers. We have addressed the growing broadcast demand for the matches by announcing an array of broadcast partners assuring live coverage of ICL Season-2 to the entire global cricket fraternity through both television and Internet mediums.”

Zee Sports will telecast the matches in Hindi while the English feed will be available on Ten Sports. Zee holds a 50 per cent stake in Dubai-based Taj TV, the company that owns and operates Ten Sports.

For the two upcoming properties, ICL has increased its promotional spend to Rs 500 million. The ICL 20s Challenge, featuring nine teams, takes place from 10 October-16 November. This will be followed by a World Series (20-28 November) among four teams.

ICL has recently acquired a new stadium in Ahmedabad and has spend Rs 100 million to refurbish it. The 41 matches will also be spread across Gurgaon, Chandigarh and Hyderabad stadiums.

During the second season, Zee Sports and Ten Sports will launch an entertainment show Cricket Boom Boom. It will be hosted by Aarti Chabria and ex-Indian pacer Atul Wasan. The show will have high profile celebrities from page 3, Bollywood, fashion designers, TV artists and host of other stars who will be quizzed and tested on all their expertise and cricket.
