Australian Open organizers increased prize money at the Grand Slam tennis tournament in Melbourne to a record A$22 million ($15 million).
The 2009 men's and women's singles champions will each get A$1.62 million, an 18 percent rise on the checks pocketed by Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova nine months ago, Tennis Australia said today.
The season-opening major, where Roger Federer could tie Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles, starts Jan. 19 at Melbourne Park.
Federer and Serena Williams each earned a record $1.5 million for their U.S. Open victories last month.
