The SA Police Service yesterday received two R44 Raven II helicopters which are intended to boost the country’s 2010 World Cup security programme.
A further four helicopters will be delivered later this year. Currently, the SAPS Air Wing operates 31 helicopters throughout the country for airborne law enforcement. Some of these helicopters are now equipped with FLIR (forward looking infrared) cameras.
Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the acquisition forms part of the procurement of various items of equipment to enhance South Africa’s capacity to secure the World Cup in an efficient and professional manner.
’It is vital that the items could be used prior to and after the event for general crime prevention tasks,’ he said.
