Beijing preparations well on track for 2014 FIBA World Championship’s bid 23/10/2008 |

FIBA President, Bob Elphinston, and FIBA Secretary General and IOC member, Patrick Baumann, met yesterday with the Minister for Sport of Beijing City and officials of the Beijing Sports Bureau and the Chinese Basketball Association to discuss the status of the preparation of their bid file for the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Men.
China, along with Denmark, France, Italy and Spain is one of the five candidates interested in hosting the 2014 edition of the FIBA World Championship, FIBA’s premier competition.
The President and the Secretary General of the International Basketball Federation were informed that the Central Government and the Mayor of the City of Beijing had approved plans for the bid and prepared the necessary financial guarantees, which will be handed to FIBA on 5th December 2008. On that date, the above-mentioned five national federations are due to confirm their bid by formally presenting their candidature files to FIBA in a public presentation ceremony to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.
At the end of yesterday’s meetings in Beijing, Elphinston and Baumann gave a briefing to representatives of the Chinese media.
Next week, back in Europe, FIBA’s top executives will visit Paris, Madrid and Rome. Copenhagen will be visited at a later date.
