BARELY a year after he left the Premier Soccer League (PSL) under a cloud, Andrew Dipela, the man so many love to vilify is back in harness.
The former PSL general manager yesterday confirmed he has been appointed 2010 venue manager for Ellis Park Stadium as from the beginning of this month.
His appointment comes in the wake of the resignation of World Cup competitions officer Dennis Mumble, who has been replaced by former Wits University chief executive Derek Blanckansee.
Dipela, who takes over Blanckansee’s position, has vast experience having worked his way up from being the PSL spokesperson in 1996 to the body’s general manager.
He however fell out of favour when he was forced to leave following sexual harassment charges by two staffers at the PSL offices last November.
After a protracted period of investigation by the PSL, charges were finally dropped and Dipela quit after a settlement deal between the parties. Dipela was unfazed about this sexual baggage he carries into the 2010 environment. “As you know the league withdrew charges and there is nothing (for me to answer to,” he said yesterday.
“Before I say anything I think you must speak to Tim (Modise) who is in the 2010 office and they can answer any questions in that regard.”
Modise, the Communications Director of the 2010 World Cup, said there was no issue around Dipela’s appointment.
Dipela outlined his role in his new position. “As 2010 manager for Ellis Park I will be concerning myself with the activities around the stadium for both Confederations Cup and the World Cup,” he said.
“My focus will be on the tourists who will come to the games, hospitality services and the hotels. I must make sure of delivery in all these aspects.
“It is a very important position and one I am pleased to be doing.” Dipela said he has been part of the Observer Missions team who visited Germany to learn more about organising the Confederations Cup and World Cup.
