News Corp.'s Fox network said the first four games of Major League Baseball's World Series between the Tampa Ray Rays and the Philadelphia Phillies drew 25 percent fewer viewers than last year's championship.
This year's games have averaged about 13 million viewers, down from 2007 when the Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in the best-of-seven series, Los Angeles-based Fox said today in an e-mail statement.
The total ratings for this year's championship may exceed last year's if Tampa Bay can avoid elimination tonight and extend the series, Fox said. The audience has also declined 21 percent from the first four games in 2006 between the Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals, Fox said.
News Corp., based in New York, fell 67 cents, or 7.9 percent, to $7.80 today in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The Class A shares have declined 62 percent this year.
