Election fever has hit triathlon. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced yesterday, the nominees for its President, Secretary General, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Executive Board and ITU Council exactly one month from election day.

With current President Les McDonald's retirement at year's end, ITU will have just its second President since its inception in 1989. More than 120 National Federations (NFs) will cast their ballots at ITU's 21st Congress on Saturday November 29th in Madrid, Spain. McDonald was ITU's founding President and is largely credited for triathlon's inclusion in the Olympic Games. His successor on the election ballot is Marisol Casado of Spain, the current ITU Treasurer and President of the European Triathlon Union.

In an organizational change to ITU's structure, the Executive Director title will change to Secretary General and will become an elected position. The job duties won't change and current Executive Director Loreen Barnett of Canada will be unchallenged in the election for Secretary General.

ITU Election Nominees:
President (1 to be elected) - Marisol Casado (ESP)
Secretary General (1 to be elected) - Loreen Barnett (CAN)
Treasurer (1 to be elected) - Tom Carrasco (PHI)
Vice Presidents (4 to be elected) - Antonio Alvarez (MEX), Sarah Springman (GBR), Bill Walker (AUS), Kyung-Sun Yu (KOR)

The most heated battle will be for the Executive Board. Eleven prominent members of 11 different National Federations are running for seven spot on ITU's Executive Board. Also to be elected are the seven committees that make up ITU Council. They include the Technical Committee, Medical Committee, Constitution Committee, Women's Committee, Credentials Committee, and Duathlon Committee.

ITU's 21st Congress gets underway on November 26 with an Executive Board meeting and a welcome reception. Congress delegates will participate in a 2-day Federation Forum that includes workshop sessions on venue operations, media, marketing, and sport development. Congress and elections will be held on November 29.
