Spain’s Secretary of State for Sports, Mr. Jaime Lissavetzky, and the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Mr. José Luis Sáez, welcomed yesterday the FIBA President Bob Elphinston and the FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann who came to Madrid to discuss the country’s bid for the 2014 FIBA World Championship.
Spain, along with China, Denmark, France and Italy, is one of the five candidates interested in hosting the 2014 edition of FIBA’s premier championship.
Both the Government and the Federation expressed their excitement and commitment in view of the possibility of Spain hosting this prestigious event in 2014, especially in light of the country’s exceptional sporting results and the successful organisation of the 2007 EuroBasket.
Earlier today, both FIBA leaders were briefed on the preliminary plans in place and then offered their comments to the media representatives in a briefing organized by the Spanish Basketball Federation at its Madrid headquarters.
On 5th December 2008, the above-mentioned five national federations are due to confirm their bid by formally presenting their candidature files to FIBA in a public presentation ceremony to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The next stop on the FIBA tour is Rome, where Mr. Elphinston and Mr. Baumann will meet with the Italian Basketball Federation and other sports and government authorities.
