Powell join England's bid to stage the 2018 World Cup
 03/11/2008

England’s Women’s Head Coach, Hope Powell has joined the bid to stage the 2018 World Cup by becoming the latest Vice President on the Bid team.

Powell joins David Beckham and John Barnes in adding ambassadorial support to the bid’s Executive Board and will immediately have an opportunity to profile England’s cause during her watching brief at the current FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup in New Zealand and the forthcoming Under-20 tournament in Chile which starts next month.

Hope said: ‘I am honoured and privileged to be asked to represent The Football Association as an ambassador for the 2018 World Cup Bid. In my football career I have been fortunate enough to both play and manage at such a prestigious event and there are many memories I will always cherish. I’ve played for and managed my country but deep down I’m still a fan so for me personally it is fantastic to be involved in the Bid.

“The tournaments in New Zealand and Chile provide the potential for me to speak to many important people about the benefits of bringing the World Cup to England. The essence of the Bid is to leave a lasting legacy across the entire world and throughout football and this will mean the women’s game can be a significant beneficiary in the whole process.

“We live in such a cosmopolitan world, but I believe football unites every fan of the game, and I hope the success of this Bid will provide a legacy that will encourage future and ongoing participation at all levels and in all areas of the world.”
