The Department of Transport and the United Arab Emirates have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will allow Emirates Airlines to increase passenger flights into Johannesburg ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
The MoU entitles Emirates Airlines - FIFA’s official carrier for the 2010 World Cup - to operate up to twenty eight weekly passenger flights into Johannesburg and 14 weekly flights to Cape Town by 2010.
The South African government has lauded the move. ’The strategy is making real progress in opening our skies to facilitate trade and tourism between South Africa, the continent and the world,’ said government spokesperson Themba Maseko.
Several new routes have opened up to SA over the past few weeks.
