Bill Ritter, Governor of Colorado, said following a visit to Beijing, the site of the Summer Games, that he supports Denver pushing to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
While on an economic-development mission to Japan and China, Ritter and a group of Colorado business leaders visited the Olympic complex in Beijing and now believes Denver remains a viable option for a future Olympics, reports 9news.
Ritter told a news conference Wednesday that Denver's 2018 bid will depend on the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision as to whether Chicago will host the 2016 Summer Games. If that happens, 9news reports the U.S. Olympic Committee will not bid until the 2022 Olympic Games.
Ritter said, "we'll wait and see what happens, whether Chicago gets the 2016 bid next October, but if they don't then I'll be full-steam ahead with our efforts to get a 2018 bid for the Winter Olympics".
He said, "it's much better to build a Winter Olympics than a Summer Olympics because the upfront investment is so much less, but it certainly did help with their infrastructure", he said, referring to the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Games.
In 2003 the Metro Denver Sports Commission established a committee to explore the possibilities of hosting the Olympic Games, and in February 2006 Denver said it was conducting a feasibility study for a 2018 Winter Olympic Games bid.
