Toronto city council put its stamp of approval on the city and the Golden Horseshoe's bid for the 2015 Pan American Games by a vote of 33 to 1.
Toronto Mayor David Miller said it was a chance to showcase Toronto to the world and urged city councillors to vote enthusiastically for it to prove to competing cities - Bogota and Lima - that Toronto wants the Games, reports the Toronto Star.
According to the Toronto Sun Miller said, "I think we should be proud to put Toronto on the world stage. But if we commit to this, we need to win".
Toronto's bid also has the support of the federal and provincial governments.
Ontario Provincial Premier Dalton McGuinty had asked the mayor to ensure that Toronto participates in the bid with enthusiasm, something other bid cities will be watching.
The Mayor said he's requested a "pre-legacy" recreation program for Toronto children, and asked that residents from across the city be hired to participate in the bid, reports the Sun.
He said, "I've also requested that if there are to be facilities built in Toronto - because Toronto would be the centre of the bid - that they be built in places that reinforce our transit plans".
He added that infrastructure for the Pan Am Games would be targeted. Athletes would be put up at the University of Toronto and other existing facilities to avoid the cost, expense and challenges that Vancouver has experienced in its construction of an Olympic Village.
