The opening game of the 2010 ice hockey world championship will be played outdoors at the home stadium of German soccer club Schalke 04, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) said on Monday.
The IHHF hopes the move will attract a record-breaking crowd.
The National Hockey League (NHL) has had great success staging an annual outdoor game and has scheduled another for New Year's day at Wrigley Field, Chicago between the Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings.
Last year 71,217 people filled Ralph Wilson stadium in Buffalo to watch the Sabres play the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The largest crowd to see a hockey game, according to the IIHF, was 74,554 for a meeting between U.S. university rivals Michigan State and Michigan in East Lansing, Michigan in 2001.
Schalke's home ground in Gelsenkirchen has a capacity of nearly 76,000.
The schedule for the 2010 world championship has yet to be confirmed but the opening game is expected to feature host Germany against Canada, Russia, Sweden, Finland or the Czech Republic.
