Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Assistant Commissioner Bud Mercer said security for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games will be subtle, adding the security budget will come in at less than $1 billion, reports the Canadian Press.
Mercer said the exact dollar figure can only be released by the government. "I would say a billion is high".
The original security budget reportedly was $175 million but when Mercer became assistant commissioner in the fall of 2007 he said it was far too low and submitted revised numbers to the federal government.
According to the Canadian Press, the Integrated Security Unit in charge of the Games is led by the RCMP but includes municipal police departments, the military, border services officials and private security.
There will be up to 4,000 Canadian soldiers involved. Lt. General Andrew Leslie said it would stretch the military's resources as war in Afghanistan continues. Leslie added, "it's going to be tough but we can get it all done".
Military camps costing an estimated $40 million are planned for the Sea-to-Sky highway that links Vancouver and Whistler, and secure zones will surround all venues with hand-held screening equipment to be used at all entrances.
There will also be a network of surveillance cameras, and the force is reportedly looking at deploying equipment that can scan for biological or nuclear threats.
But Mercer said, "I'd be personally disappointed if anybody left here and all they remembered was security. So our goal is to do it the Canadian way. Security will be there, security will be subtle, security will be friendly, based on the threat level we're at today".
