John’s responsibilities will include developing the marketing plan for the 2014 Games that will communicate key messages about the Games to a wide variety of target groups in the years leading up to 2014; he will be responsible for the development of the brand marketing programme that will include the development and launch of the Games visual identity and the establishment of brand guidelines to support its use; he will also be responsible for developing the sponsorship, merchandising and ticket sales strategies for the Games.

In 2005-6 he worked as interim Head of Commercial and Marketing at the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) where, amongst other achievements he set and delivered a new ticketing strategy, recruited new corporate sponsorship partners such as Standard Life Investments, and devised and implemented successful marketing campaigns. Prior to his time at the SRU John was a Group Board Director and Managing Director (London) for bd ntwk where he worked on accounts such as Coca Cola, Orange, Peugeot, Inbev and Wanadoo.
Announcing the appointment, John Scott, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014 said:
“Since I started at the Organising Committee in August last year, my main priority has been to recruit a talented and committed senior management team. John’s appointment is the final piece of the jigsaw at this stage in our development and I am delighted that we have secured the services of such an experienced and talented individual for this role. John knows the Scottish business community well and has worked with some major global brands during his agency career. I believe he will make a hugely valuable contribution to our objective of delivering an outstanding Games for Glasgow and Scotland in 2014.”
John Donnelly said:
“I am very excited, and it is a great honour, to have the opportunity to contribute to what will be the largest and most successful sporting event that Scotland has ever hosted.”
”There will undoubtedly be challenges along the way - for example raising sponsorship income against the current economic backdrop – but these are challenges that I am relishing and which are part of what makes this such an exciting opportunity. I am thoroughly looking forward to working on the Organising Committee for the 2014 Games.”
