Now, Fifa says it will monitor Satyam
 09/01/2009

A day after reposing full faith in Satyam's ability to meet its commitments, football's governing body Fifa sang a different tune on
Wednesday.

"Fifa is monitoring the situation related to Satyam, a company which provides services of technical support to Fifa. At this stage and until we have more information, it is too early for Fifa to make any further comments on the matter," a Fifa spokesman told TOI in an e-mail.

On Tuesday, Fifa said that Satyam's sponsorship activation programme in relation to the 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup and 2010 Fifa World Cup continues as was agreed at a meeting six months ago and it had no reason to believe that the Indian IT major would be unable to live up to its promises.

In November 2007, Satyam announced that it had signed up as sponsor and official IT services provider for the Fifa World Cup meets in 2010 and 2014. As well as the Fifa Confederation Cup tournaments which would precede these World Cup competitions. However, it has till date not specified the sponsorship money it would have to pay.

Fifa is worried that the television networks and sponsors may try to renegotiate their earlier agreements for the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa.

Satyam is a part of the six-member World Cup sponsor group.
