The SABC says there will be no need for South Africans to buy the new digital terrestrial television (DTT) product in order to see all the Confederations Cup and World Cup games.
The broadcaster’s spokesman Kaizer Kganyago gave the assurance this week.
“It’s misleading that [to watch the] Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup depends on DTT,” he said.
“Between now and 2011 [when the current analogue TV signal is switched off] we’ll have dual view, where you can watch [SABC] on both analogue and digital signals.
“Everybody will see the games live as we’ll shift around programmes to allow for that,” he said.
Kganyago said this would happen in spite of the SABC’s obligation to screen a certain amount of local content, news and educational programming each day
Viewers who are able to buy the digital set-top box, similar to a decoder, will be able to watch the games in higher definition and with better sound and extras such as soccer documentaries.
That’s if the department of communications is able to bring the boxes to market in time for the tournaments.
Department spokesman Joe Makhafola said that the DTT trial, which ends in June, will enable it to speed up the delivery of the boxes.
The Confederations Cup, a dress rehearsal for next year’s World Cup in South Africa, will take place from June 14 to June 28.
The SABC has ordered four high-definition production vans for sport events. The first is expected to arrive in time for the Confederations Cup and the second before the World Cup.
The other two are expected to be assembled in South Africa.
