India hopes the 2010 World Series of Boxing event, a lucrative international tournament being proposed by amateur boxing's governing body (AIBA), will help give the sport a boost in the country.
The Indian Boxing Federation (IBF), which celebrated the country's first Olympic gold medal in Beijing last summer, is confident India will be one of the 12 city-based teams from three continents to participate in the event.
"The series is to feature four city teams each from Asia, Europe and America in five categories on a home-and-away basis," IBF Secretary-General Colonel P.K. Muralidharan Raja told Reuters on Thursday.
"The AIBA along with a marketing firm is working out the bidding procedure and I am sure corporate India will successfully bid for a team."
Raja attended an AIBA meeting on the subject in China last weekend.
Boxing is growing in popularity in India after Vijender Kumar clinched a middleweight bronze at the Beijing Games. The country also won three bronzes at the last boxing world cup.
