The Chicago Cubs may have a new owner by April’s opening day if the team gets help from Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, the Associated Press said, citing club Chairman Crane Kenney.

“If we could get some assistance with the commissioner, there’s a vetting with the ownership committee, and then there would be a full vetting with the ownership groups,” Kenney said yesterday at an owners’ meeting in Paradise Valley, Arizona, according to AP. “So if we can get a little assistance there, we can maybe get there by April.”

The Tribune Co., which has filed for bankruptcy protection, put the Cubs up for sale after the company was bought by billionaire Sam Zell. A potential buyer would have to be approved by the ownership committee and then by team owners, AP said.

“We’re anxious both to have the season started and have a new owner in place and move forward with some of the things that have been idling, I would say, in the last year,” Kenney said, according to AP. “I think their goal would be to have someone negotiate final terms to a deal sometime before early February.”
