SABC appoints new 2010 boss
 19/01/2009

Peter Kwele has been appointed as the new head of SABC’s crucial 2010 project unit, the public broadcaster said.

SABC group content enterprises executive Mvuzo Mbebe made the announcement after months of speculation on who would fill the position.

"Having worked with Kwele for the past 18 months I am confident that he is the right man for the job.

"SABC’s delivery of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is of critical importance and I am positive that his experience within the corporation as well as his strategic approach will ensure that the SABC fulfils its mandate with regards to the world cup," Mbebe said in a statement.

Kwele was previously SABC’s general manager for strategic marketing and communications.

Speaking immediately after his appointment, Kwele said he was excited to be given the opportunity to head the 2010 unit.

"The 2010 FIFA World Cup is a historical event for South Africa and for SABC as the official broadcaster. I am proud to be at the forefront of this event and I am certainly up for the challenge and determined to fly both the SABC and the South African flags high for the world to see and notice,"

Kwele holds a BA Honours Degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US.
