WBT Welsh International Open Attracts Gravells As Sponsor
 26/01/2009

The 2009 Welsh International Open, the final ranking event of the World Bowls Tour season, has attracted leading Welsh car dealership Gravells as title sponsor.

Furthermore, the Gravells Welsh International Open will be staged for the first time at the new City and County of Swansea Indoor Bowls Club in Swansea, from 31 January to 6 February.

The championship, with live coverage by BBC TV Wales, will feature the top 16 bowlers in the world - led by England's defending champion Mark Royal and Scotland's five times world champion Alex Marshall - joined by qualifiers from the UK, Australia, South Africa, USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel and New Zealand.

"The World Bowls Tour is delighted to welcome Gravells as title sponsors of this prestigious and long-established event," commented Welshman John Price, a WBT Director. "We are also pleased to have the support and assistance of the City and County of Swansea, and also the City and County of Swansea Indoor Bowls Club.

"Without the support and assistance of Chairman John Hague, and the committee and members of the club, it would be impossible for us to stage this world class bowls event."

John Hague responded: "As Chairman of the City and County of Swansea Indoor Bowls Club, I and the members of the club are proud and delighted that such a prestigious event as the Welsh International Open Bowls Championships 2009 is coming to our city’s indoor bowls stadium.

"The club are no strangers to holding major tournaments of this kind. We were, for example, hosts to the British Indoor Bowls Championships which was a big success and attracted large crowds to the city for the duration of the event.

"I believe we will be able to attract similar crowds to the indoor bowls stadium and I would appeal to all bowls enthusiasts to support the tournament.

"The fact that such a prestigious event as this is coming to Swansea augers well for future opportunities to host tournaments of a similar standing on the UK and international stage in future years.

"I am confident Members of the Swansea Indoor Bowls Club who are giving up their time and volunteering to work at the event will help ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and is a tremendous success.

"I would also like to thank the City & County of Swansea for delivering on its promise to build an indoor bowls stadium that is capable of hosting significant events in the UK and international bowls calendar such as this," concluded Hague.

Gravells is the oldest Renault dealership in the UK having been awarded the franchise in 1954. With locations in Swansea, Haverfordwest and Kidwelly, the company was founded in the picturesque town of Kidwelly in 1932 by Tom Gravell MBE.
