“Safe City“ will be deployed at Sochi 2014
 28/01/2009

Russian Deputy Interior Minister Mikhail Sukhodolsky briefed journalists today on the results of Sochi 2014 security venue inspections conducted by Ministry bodies since 2007, outlining the “Safe City” security system to be deployed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

According to Mr Sukhodosky, the system "includes all the technologies we use in law and order protection. I mean the video cameras monitoring traffic, the alarm buttons used to alert police, and the monitoring of mobile police unit positions.”

The Deputy Minister added that private security organizations and even international aviation can be incorporated into the system. To ensure cohesion among all composite departments, integrated and sustainable channels of communication, operating in real time, are needed to minimize the time needed for information exchange and processing.

At an approximate cost of 900 million rubles (over US$ 27m), Sochi’s “Safe City” development will be funded in installments drawn from regional and municipal budgets until 2010.

During his vist to Sochi, Mr Sukhodolsky familiarized himself with existing and newly-constructed security venues. Integrated Information Technology systems “Sova”, “Potok” and “Papilon”, which provide remote access to key databases, were demonstrated to Mr Sukhodolsky at Psou military station on Russia’s border with Abkhazia.

“I was informed that a month ago the procedure of fingerprint data processing took 12 minutes, and now takes only 6 minutes” Sukhodolsky added.

The Deputy Minister also visited a camp for 10,000 Olympic construction workers being developed in the Imeretinskaya valley during his two day visit. On 27 January he will lead an extended focus session on security in the build up to the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and during the events themselves.
