UK Sport has today announced a new partnership with British Airways, the official airline of the London 2012 Games, to benefit all athletes on the World Class Performance Programme in their quest for medal success.
The British Airways partnership is dedicated to helping athletes arrive prepared and equipped for training and competitions abroad. Nearly 1,500 athletes from 28 Olympic and 20 Paralympic sports will benefit from the partnership, which offers discounts, Executive Club membership, a dedicated booking line and baggage and equipment support to them and their coaches. There are also discounts available for athletes’ families, who can also be key members of the support network, when traveling to watch them compete. The partnership brings real added value to the core funding provided to athletes via UK Sport’s World Class Performance Programme.
John Steele, Chief Executive of UK Sport, said: “We are delighted to enter into this partnership with the official airline of the London 2012 Games. International travel is a fundamental part of an elite athlete’s training and competition schedule, so the benefits that British Airways are offering will make a real difference to our chances at all World and European championships and of course to our ambitions for medal success at London 2012.”
Willie Walsh, Chief Executive of British Airways, added: “At British Airways, we want to help nurture and develop our British athletes that made us feel so proud when they competed in Beijing. Bringing home so many Olympic and Paralympic medals has got all of us excited – and looking forward to London 2012. As a sponsor of London 2012 and a partner to UK Sport, we hope that the benefits we bring will be greatly received by British athletes.”
The announcement was celebrated at the unveiling of the official British Airways London 2012 aircraft named in honour of triple Beijing Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy.
