Armstrong Helps Tour Down Under Boost Economy by $25 Million
 20/02/2009

Lance Armstrong’s comeback to professional cycling at the Tour Down Under in Australia helped more than double the event’s contribution to the local economy.

January’s race near Adelaide injected A$39 million ($24.9 million) into the South Australian economy compared with A$17.3 million last year, Premier Mike Rann said in a statement. Interstate and overseas visitors more than doubled to 36,200.

“It was the biggest event we have ever staged,” Rann told reporters today. “I guess we have to say thanks to Lance Armstrong because his decision to make his worldwide comeback here in Adelaide paid enormous dividends.”

The 37-year-old Armstrong, who overcame cancer to win a record seven straight Tour de France titles, came out of retirement to raise awareness about the illness and because he missed competing. He finished 29th of 133 riders at the Tour Down Under.
