With the Cheltenham Festival starting today, leading bookmaker Coral is predicting that up to £500 million will be bet across Britain next week, with much of it staked on the 26 Cheltenham races and eight Champions League matches.
Despite the current economic uncertainty, Coral reports that all recent indicators suggest betting turnover on the Cheltenham Festival will equal last year’s record-breaking level.
"The Cheltenham Festival is now established as one of the most popular sporting events of the year, and not even the credit crunch will prevent punters from enjoying the action next week," said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.
"In fact, punters might even think the likes of Champion Hurdle favourite Binocular and Kauto Star, bidding to win his second Gold Cup, offer the perfect remedy to the doom and gloom of the credit crunch. We have already taken more ante post bets on Cheltenham than last year, and the combination of Cheltenham during the day and the Premier League big guns in Champions League action in the evening should ensure betting levels equal or even exceed last year's record-breaking half billion pound figure," added Clare.
