The Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC) announced the latest work on the construction of sports venues for the Games on March 11th. So far, 10 of the 12 venues have been under construction, including the Guangdong Olympic Aquatics Centre, the Guangdong Olympic Tennis Centre, the Guangzhou New Town Asian Games Stadium, the Guangzhou Velodrome, Nansha Stadium, the gymnasium in Guangzhou Sports College, Guangzhou Skeet Training Center, Huadu New Stadium, the gymnasium in the Huangpu Sports Center and Haizhu Stadium. All of the 12 venues were expected to be completed by the end of 2009 and begin trial operation next March. Meanwhile, the Guangdong Heavy Athletics Stadium and the Guangzhou Chinese Chess Institute are being designed and are ready for public bidding.

Renovation of the Guangzhou Gymnasium and Triathlon Court in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center has been completed. Renovation of the Tianhe Gymnasium, Tianhe Stadium and the Guangzhou Equestrian Center is being carried out. In addition, renovation of other sports venues concerned is either being designed or ready for bidding. In summary, construction of the sports venues is going smoothly.

Due to the advanced rail network in Guangzhou, easy access to the abovementioned sports venues would be granted, said Peng Gaofeng, Director of the Venues Department of GAGOC. The public transport network has covered all sports venues. Also, over 74% of the sports venues can be accessed via subway.
