Upon completing its visit to Spain, which included trips to all five Spanish cities interested in becoming World Championship venues in 2014 (Granada, Sevilla, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Bilbao and Madrid), the 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission heads now to Italy in order to conclude its tour of the three candidate countries interested in organizing the 2014 edition of basketball’s premier championship.

The three-person 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission, composed by Mr. Borislav Stankovic (FIBA’s Secretary General Emeritus), Mr. Markus Studer (FIBA’s Chief Operating Officer) and Mr. Predrag Bogosavljev (FIBA’s Head of Events), will remain in Italy for the whole week.

The 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission’s agenda for next week’s stay in Italy includes several operational meetings, the inspection of the potential facilities (proposed arenas/venues and hotels) and trips to the five Italian cities interested in becoming World Championship venues in 2014: Turin (Monday 30th March), Milan (Tuesday 31st March), Siena and Bologna (Wednesday 1st April) and Rome (Thursday 2nd Friday 3rd April).

In addition, the Commission, accompanied by Mr. Dino Meneghin, President of the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP), will be officially received by the mayors of the above-mentioned cities, as well as by other relevant Italian sport and political authorities.

Once the trips to China, Spain and Italy have been completed and all aspects of the three bids have been carefully revised and all commitments assessed, the 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission will prepare in-depth reports which will be brought forward to the FIBA Central Board members.

Then, on 23rd May 2009, at its meeting in Geneva, the FIBA Central Board will decide on the host of the 2014 World Championship for Men.
