For the first time ever, a World Cup in Artistic Gymnastics was planned to be held in Puerto Rico. After having staged the 32nd World Championships in Artistic Gymnastics in 1996 and the 3rd FIG Council in 2003, the City of San Juan, the island’s capital, had planned to host the first Diego Lizardi Memorial, a FIG category A World Cup from June 3 – 7 in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico.
It is with great regret that the Puerto Rico Gymnastics Federation was forced to call off this tournament.
President Jose O. Vargas and the Executive Committee came to this difficult decision for reasons that are entirely unrelated to the federation, but which stem from the global economic crisis. The sponsorship money they were counting on for the event has not materialised and could no longer be guaranteed, making it impossible for the organisers to host the World Cup this year. They’ re hoping for a May edition in 2010.
The FIG deeply regrets the absence of the Puerto Rican world cup stage in 2009.
