Horse quarantine will play a significant part in organization of the 16th Asian Games' Equestrian competition, announced at a press conference yesterday by the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC).
According to Zeng Qingchun, Vice Director of the Horse Quarantine for the 16th Asian Games' Equestrian Competition Panel and Vice Director of GAGOC's External Relations Department, over 200 horses from 20 Asian countries will participate in the Guangzhou Asian Games' Equestrian competition and the work of horse quarantine has started.
As it will be the first time for mainland China to hold a major international equestrian competition, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) attaches great importance to the horse quarantine work, for which several documents have been compiled, including Questionnaire for the Horses Participating in the 16th Asian Games (Chinese and English version), Immigration Requirements for the Participant Horses' Quarantine & Sanitation (Chinese and English version) and Horse Quarantine Work Plan.
The recently formed Horse Quarantine for the 16th Asian Games' Equestrian Competition Panel held its first meeting on March 20 and stressed the importance of efficiency in the horse quarantine work.
Zeng said that the overall objective of the horse quarantine work is to guarantee safety and ensure a smooth competition, which means to guarantee the safety of China's livestock husbandry and the health of people in China, to guarantee the safety of the horses participating in the 16th Asian Games during their quarantine, training and competition, to avoid infections and cross infections among the horses, to guarantee their health, to be co-ordinated with arrangements of the Equestrian competition so that the competition can proceed smoothly, and to ensure safe return of the horses in accordance with the immigration quarantine requirements.
In order to achieve the overall objective, the horse quarantine panel will accomplish ten major tasks by November 2009, such as finalizing immigration requirements for the participant horses' quarantine & sanitation, producing the horse quarantine certificate and compiling guidelines for the horse quarantine procedure.
