America's Cup meeting planned
 15/04/2009

Attempts are being made to set up a meeting in Geneva next week between representatives of the America's Cup holding club, the Societe Nautique de Geneve, and the Challenger designated by the New York courts, the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco.

At the same time, a meeting is being mooted between the America's Cup holder Ernesto Bertarelli, as head of the Alinghi team which successfully defended the cup in Valencia in 2007, and Larry Ellison, boss of the challenging BMW Oracle team.

The dates and places have not been revealed, in the hope of maintaining secrecy, and nor has any agenda. But, at the top of any list will have to be talks on whether to go ahead with a one-on-one between these two or set the court decision which sanctions that aside and seek a multi-challenger solution which would allow in many other syndicates, including Britain's Team Origin. The signs were not good for the rest of the challengers as the latest letter from Alinghi asked for details of BMW Oracle's giant trimaram. The question of dates and venues would quickly follow.

Avoiding some of the bad luck which has plagued them so far, Bouwe Bekking's Telefonica Blue was holding a slender lead from overall leader Ericsson 4, skippered by Torben Grael, as the seven boats on the sixth, 4,900-mile leg of the Volvo round the world race, completed the third day from Rio de Janeiro to Boston.

A resurgent Dutch entry, Delta Lloyd, which as ABN Amro won the last race but missed leg five because of damage, was in a tussle with Ericsson 3 for third place with the final three being Telefonica Black, the American entry Puma, and Irish/Chinese boat Green Dragon, skippered by British Olympian Ian Walker.
