The official UEFA EURO 2008™ website, euro2008.com, has been selected as an Official Honoree for the Best Home/Welcome Page category in the 13th annual Webby Awards – the leading international accolade honouring excellence on the internet.
Remarkable achievement
The Official Honoree distinction is awarded to the top 15 per cent of all work entered that exhibits remarkable achievement. Nearly 10,000 entries were received from over 60 countries. A record 61 million visitors clicked on to euro2008.com during last summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland.
Second UEFA site award
This is the second such award for official UEFA sites. The European body's website uefa.com was recognised in the eleventh annual Webby Awards in 2007, when the site was chosen as an Official Honoree in the Best Home/Welcome Page and Podcasts categories.
'Oscars of the Internet'
Established in 1996 and described as the 'Oscars of the Internet' by The New York Times, the Webbys are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a body of leading web experts, business figures, luminaries, visionaries and creative celebrities.
Users' support
"The uefa.com team is delighted to have been acknowledged by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences for a second time," said uefa.com editor-in-chief David Farrelly. "The success of euro2008.com is not only emphasised by this official honour, but also reflects the support of our users who played their part in engaging with the content. This was reflected in our page views which stretched beyond one billion for the 130 days in which the UEFA EURO 2008™ final tournament site existed last year."
