The World Cup is the most widely broadcast sporting event in the world, with the 2006 tournament drawing a global TV audience of billions.
Fifa is expecting a record number of African viewers in 2010, and has formed a strategic alliance with the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) to place TV rights in 41 sub-Saharan territories, including Ghana, Ivory Coast and Tanzania.
The initiative will involve Fifa, the AUB and the broadcasters sharing revenue and risk, making it easier for broadcasters to afford rights.
A portion of the revenue will be used for legacy projects in Africa, such as the Fifa-AUB Broadcast Academy, which will host week-long seminars across sub-Saharan Africa to build capacity and transfer skills to the African broadcast community.
A transfer of skills will also take place in South Africa as a result of the partnership between Fifa's host broadcaster HBS and the country's official broadcaster, the SABC.
