Sochi 2014 will be broadcast to the world in high definition – allowing viewers from across the globe to see Russia’s first Winter Games in crystal clear picture quality.

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee discussed the broadcast organization and implementation of high-definition television (HDTV) at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Using international best practice, Sochi 2014 will ensure the international broadcast signal from Olympic venues is enabled with HDTV technology.

At the meeting between Sochi 2014 and the OBS delegation led by Yiannis Exarchos, Sochi 2014 broadcast facilities were comprehensively discussed. In addition to broadcasting in a digital, HDTV format that will be supported by Dolby 5.1. Sound, Russia’s first Winter Games will use a variety of innovative technology including integrated IT solutions such as Video on Demand.

The implementation of cutting-edge broadcast technology at Sochi 2014 may become the basis of major changes across Russian television and may lead to developments in the production and broadcast of television programs in Russia.

One of the major projects that the technology department of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee is undertaking is the creation of telecommunications infrastructure, which will ensure the highest quality broadcasting is possible during Russia’s first Winter Games. This project is being undertaken in conjunction with Rostelecom and MegaFon – the Sochi 2014 Telecommunications General Partners.

The OBS experts emphasized their desire to provide world-leading training to Russian broadcasting companies on the development of the necessary technological capabilities to run innovative broadcasting during Sochi 2014. They highlighted that the Russian International Olympic University can play a great role in the development of expertise in this area, and that the training will become a key aspect of the Sochi 2014 legacy for the whole of Russia.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014 President and CEO, said:

All Olympic Games leave a huge legacy – the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Moscow helped make substantial strides in Russian broadcasting, and ‘Olympic’ equipment is still being used across the former Soviet Union. The innovative Sochi 2014 Games will allow us to make a giant step toward high-definition television throughout Russia”.

The meeting between OBS and Sochi 2014 was also attended by representatives of the leading Russian TV channels – ‘Sport’, ‘Russia’, ‘Channel One Russia’ and ‘NTV+’.
