The ‘World Badminton Championships 2009’ event will be hosted in India from 10-16 August, at Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad.

This is for the first time that India will hold a world championship of an all Olympic sport. The event is classified as the only test event in the calendar year of the International Olympic Association (IOA).

Overall, 500 participants from over 50 countries are expected to attend the championship.

In a span of a year India has been host to badminton events ranging from the world junior championships 2008 to the Grand Prix series (twice) 08-09. It will also host the Asian Championships next year.

Incidentally the only other test event in the next calendar year of the IOA before the Comnwealth Games 2010 is the Men’s field hockey World Cup, which will also be hosted in India.

Badminton Association of India (BAI) president VK Verma says, "We are proud to be hosts to the biggest global badminton event. With our proven records of successfully managing premier events of the sport in the past I am sure that the BWF had all the right reasons to nominate us as the hosts to the World Badminton Championships 2009. As the Indian youngsters create ripples in the global stage of the sport, this event will definitely be a big booster to many aspiring superstars and also for the present contingent to showcase their talents and performance levels in front of a huge global audience. Being hosts to the world event we also are all excited to showcase our technical and infrastructural expertise in the sport”.

Disregarding all allegations about India’s inability to meet the norms for hosting the much awaited Commonwealth Games 2010, Verma adds, “The only two test events before the Commonwealth Games 2010 are being held in India. To host events of these statures we need to have our infrastructure and technology in place in accordance to the norms of international standards.

"The fact the Badminton World Federation and the International Hockey Federation has nominated India as the hosts to its biggest global event makes it quite evident about India’s readiness to stage the Commonwealth Games 2010. The work for the CWG10 is progressing in schedule and we are confident of meeting all deadlines in order to host the CWG10.”
