Rene Fasel, the president of the International Ice Hockey Federation, on Sunday denied allegations published in a Swiss newspaper that he benefited financially from marketing deals for the world championship.
Fasel, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board, responded to claims made by SonntagsZeitung that payments were made indirectly to Fasel by Swiss sports agency Infront, the IIHF's exclusive marketing partner for the annual championship.
"I have never received any commissions or bonuses from these contracts," Fasel told reporters at a news conference. "There ... has never been a consulting agreement between me and Infront."
The newspaper said Infront paid 400,000 Swiss francs ($355,000; euro265,000) in fees to a company run by a friend of Fasel.
A rival company said it had failed to win contracts with Infront even though the successful bidder had little experience in the winter sports market.
Fasel, the IIHF president for 15 years, said Sunday he had merely helped a "long-term" friend "open doors in the Asia market."
He had been joined by Infront president and chief executive Philippe Blatter at a press conference on Friday to announce that Finland and Sweden would co-host the 2012 and 2013 championships.
Fasel did not take questions on the subject but said it was "unfortunate" that the allegations could overshadow the worlds final being played Sunday between Russia and Canada.
Fasel, an IOC member since 1995, was elected to its executive board last year to represent winter sports federations. He is also chairman of the coordination commission for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
