On Saturday 23rd May 2009, at its meeting in Geneva, the FIBA Central Board, the highest executive body of the International Basketball Federation, will decide on the host of the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Men.

In the afternoon of Saturday 23rd May, at 18:30 hours CET, FIBA President Bob Elphinston and FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann, in the presence of two internationally renowned all-time basketball stars, will open the sealed envelope carrying the result of the FIBA Central Board voting and will announce the name of the country that will be entrusted with the responsibility and honour of organising the 2014 FIBA World Championship. The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) and the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) are pursuing their dream to host the world’s most important basketball event in 2014.

The FIBA Central Board will meet from Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th May in Geneva’s Intercontinental Hotel. The session on Saturday 23rd May will be entirely devoted to the assignment of the 2014 FIBA World Championship. All FIBA Central Board meetings will be completely closed to the media.

On Saturday 23rd May, from 14:00 hours CET, the three candidate countries will make their final presentations in front of the FIBA Central Board: Italy will be first (from 14:00 to 15:00 hours), Spain will follow (15:15 to 16:15 hours) and China will be the last one to take the floor (16:30 to 17:30 hours).

The final presentations from the three delegations will be followed by a report from the 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission that visited all three countries during the month of March.

Immediately after (at approximately 17:30 hours CET), the 20 eligible FIBA Central Board members will cast their secret ballot votes. In order to be elected the winner, a candidature will need to receive a simple majority of the votes cast. In case that no candidate receives such majority in the first round, the candidate with the least number of votes will be eliminated and a second round of voting will be conducted with the other two candidatures.
