Officials braced for Commonwealth Games security challenge
 20/05/2009

Indian officials have much work to do to allay security concerns for next year's Commonwealth Games due to the tense situation in the region, organisers said on Tuesday.

"We've to satisfy them (Commonwealth Games Federation) on the security aspect," organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi a told a news conference.

"We need to have more communication (with CGF), that is a very important aspect of the games."

Security concerns have shot up in south Asia since militant attacks in Mumbai last November killed 166 people. Gunmen ambushed the Sri Lanka cricket team bus in Pakistan in March, raising more fears sports could be targeted in the future.

Australia has raised major concerns about the games to be staged in October next year but the organisers and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) have assured the security will be on a par with last year's Beijing Olympics.

"The CGF had sent a couple of delegates to check on it. They have given a report for us to follow up on," said Kalmadi.

"They will be judging -- scenario in all our neighbouring countries also worries them -- so we have to give them a lot of comfort on security."

Kalmadi said a new federal government voted to power last week would help stage the games smoothly and overcome any impact the global economic meltdown could have on the event.

He unveiled a model apartment at the games village being built. It is expected to contain 1,170 flats for some 4,000 athletes and officials.

India hopes the games would help showcase its ability to stage major events and eventually bag the Olympics.
