The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee held a seminar on energy supply. The event, studying one of the crucial areas of Olympic and Paralympic Games delivery, was attended by International Olympic Committee (IOC) experts and officials from the Russian Ministry of Regional Development, the Russian Ministry of Energy, the State Corporation Olimpstroy and the Krasnodar Region’s administration.

Russian energy experts presented a five year strategy for increasing power supply in the Sochi region. According to the strategy, the capacity of the Region’s energy network will increase by two and a half times by 2014 guaranteeing stable power supply during and after the Games. The project will include the redevelopment of existing energy infrastructure and the development of new energy facilities. Sochi currently consumes 424 megawatts of energy; 340 megawatts will be needed for the operation of Olympic venues and infrastructure.

During the meeting, the IOC experts emphasized the importance of Sochi 2014’s energy development activities and presented the energy supply plans based on the experience gained during the delivery and staging of Sydney 2000, Salt Lake City 2002, Atlanta 2004, Athens 2004, Turin 2006 and Beijing 2008.

The Russian organizers explained that according to the Federal program of construction of Olympic venues and development of Sochi as a mountain-climate resort the electricity substation “Poselkovaya” had become operational in early 2009. Sochi’s thermoelectric power station is currently under construction– this will increase the power supply by 160 MW. The construction of the “Laura” and “Rosa Khutor” substations will be completed in November 2010 and the substation “Mzymta” will be completed by March 2011 – at present these facilities are in the design phase.

The reconstruction of the Krasnopolyanskaya hydro-power station will be completed in March 2010 and construction of the Adler thermoelectric power station will begin in 2009 and will have an operational capacity of 360 MW.

Another major step in the Krasnodar Region’s energy supply will be the construction of the “Bykhta” substation which will have a capacity of 110 MW and will be equipped with two 25 MW transformers. The substation will be also equipped with insulating gas based switches and a new generation of 10 kilovolt switch-gears. All equipment used in the substation will include secure microprocessor protection.

All energy developments built in preparation for the Olympic Games will be constructed in harmony with the environment and will be designed to ensure no damage is caused to the surrounding landscape.

The seminar was part of the unique IOC program: Olympic Games Knoweledge Management (OGKM). Through the OGKM, Russian organizers have had the opportunity to benefit from first hand experience of previous Games organizers in the area of the Games energy supply.

Sochi 2014 President and CEO, Dmitry Chernyshenko, noted:

“As the host city, we will deliver a sustainable power supply, which is a ‘must-have’ for Olympic broadcasting among other aspects Games of Games delivery. Our IOC colleagues noted that if people didn’t comment on the energy supply during the Games, the event was successful: millions of sports fans around the globe watched the Games broadcasts and city guests, athletes and members of the Olympic Family experienced excellent facilities and warm hospitality. The infrastructure for the Games that is currently under construction guarantees an unprecedented legacy for the city and the Region and sets ground for stable growth in future.”
